Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ on Sunday March 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday morning, March 2 at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.
Born in Springfield, MA, Richard, known to family and friends as “Dick”, lived in North Arlington, NJ for 62 years before settling in Wanaque, NJ.
From a young age, Richard had a passion for aviation. As a teenager, he worked to fund his own flight training in Springfield and flew small aircraft before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1953. His time in uniform reflected the deep sense of duty and patriotism that remained with him throughout his life.
Following his military service, Richard built a distinguished career in banking, rising to Senior Vice President in the mortgage divisions at Yorkwood Savings and Loan and Anchor Savings Bank before retiring in 1994.
In retirement, Richard began another chapter of dedicated service. From 2001 to 2015, he served in the Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. He attained the rank of Major and served as Deputy Commander of the Cadet Program. In recognition of his leadership and commitment, he received numerous honors, including an Achievement Award and a Commander’s Commendation. Richard took great pride in mentoring young cadets, many of whom went on to serve with distinction across all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
An avid outdoorsman, Richard found joy in camping, fishing, and photography. He carried a lifelong curiosity about history, science, and the natural world, sharing that wonder with his sons. He especially cherished time spent with his family and had a special fondness for the family's two dachshunds, a reflection of his love of animals and a source of great happiness throughout the years.
At his core, he was a warm and friendly man whose face would light up whenever he saw someone, whether family, friends or new acquaintances. Most of all, he adored his wife Carmela, remaining devoted to her throughout their 64 years of marriage.
His life was defined by integrity, loyalty, and a generous spirit that shaped every chapter of his 93 years.
Richard was the beloved husband of Carmela Mary Azarian (née Marzulli); the devoted father of Daniel Richard Azarian, Robert Michael Azarian and his wife Jacqueline, and Richard Carl Azarian Jr.; the cherished grandfather of Nicole Aguirre (née Azarian), and her husband, Victor, and Jade Azarian; and the dear brother of Thomas Azarian and the late Marjorie Edgerly (née Azarian).
