Rafael Perez Concepcion, 84, passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Clara Mass Medical Center, Belleville, NJ, surrounded by his family.
Born in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico with 10 siblings, he moved to the United States in 1965. Rafael has lived in Newark, NJ for the last 55 years.
Mr. Perez was a long-time businessman. He owned and operated Perez Grocery Store in Newark for 15 years. After that, he then owned the Brothers Cocktail Lounge in Newark.
Rafael is survived by three daughters, Evelyn Escobar and her husband, Jose (also known as Pete), Maritza Ferreira and her husband, Fausto, Janet Serrano and her husband, Serafin; three sisters, Luz M. Perez, Eterbina Riveira and Carmen Martinez; two brothers, Julio Perez and Santiago Perez (also known as Papo). He was the grandfather of Stefanie Ferreira-Cunha, Nicholas Ferreira, Brianna Serrano and Christopher Serrano. He also leaves behind six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Perez was predeceased by his son, Rafael Perez, Jr., with who he will now reunite once again.
The funeral will be from the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home on Monday, December 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. On Tuesday, December 21 at 9:00 a.m. we will meet once more at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.
