Patrick J. Tully, 86, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021, in St. Michael’s Medical Center, Newark, NJ.
The funeral will be from the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ on Thursday, December 30 at 9:00 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia Church, Kearny at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ. Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 29 from 4 to 8 p.m.
Mr. Tully was born and raised in Newark, NJ. He has lived in Kearny for over 50 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956.
Mr. Tully started his career as a bus driver for New Jersey Transit in Newark, becoming a shop steward representing his fellow drivers before being elected as the Secretary-Treasurer for Local 819 of the Amalgamated Transit Union in 1972. He later served as the Business Manager of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) for 23 years. Mr. Tully was also an International Vice President for OPEIU for 11 years and a long-time Executive Board member of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO. Mr. Tully also worked for the Kearny Board of Education as a School Bus Driver for ten years before retiring in 2017.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Roseann (nee Walsh) Tully, five children, Patrick Tully (Dawn), Elizabeth Perry, Catherine McGovern (Kevin), Christopher Tully (Susan), and Steven Tully. He was the brother of Michael Leonard “Lenny” Tully, Frances Rainey, and was predeceased by his brother, John Tully, and his parents Edith and Patrick. He was the beloved grandfather of Caitlin Samper, Lea Perry, Kelsey Tully, Morgan Tully, Molly McGovern, Aidan McGovern, Ryan Tully, Aaron Tully, Nicole McAdoo, and Jacqueline D’Agostino. He was the great-grandfather of Oliver Samper and was the uncle to many nieces and nephews.
