Mark DeGiovanni Obituary

Mark DeGiovanni, a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend passed away suddenly leaving behind a legacy of passion, strength, and joy.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ on Friday, March 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning, March 8 at 11:00 a.m. in Corpus Christi R.C. Church, Hasbrouck Heights, NJ.

Mark worked as a journeyman electrician at IBEW local 102 union for the past 25 years.  Mark was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends with many projects and electrical work requested of him. His lifelong love was the sport of boxing, a journey that began in the gyms of Kearny at a young age. With unmatched dedication, he became a three-time U.S. Boxing State Champion in the welterweight division (147 lbs.) and earned a spot on the USA National Team, proudly representing his country while competing across Europe. He also relished the opportunity to get together with family and friends to watch professional fights.

Beyond his own achievements in the ring, Mark devoted himself to shaping the next generation of boxers. As a dedicated youth trainer, he shared his deep knowledge and love of the sport with young fighters throughout the Northeast, inspiring countless athletes with his guidance and encouragement.

But Mark’s fighting spirit wasn’t just reserved for the gym—he carried it into every aspect of life with a playful and infectious energy. Family gatherings often turned into impromptu sparring sessions, where his nieces and nephews eagerly donned the gloves, laughing as they tried to land a punch on their skilled and ever-present uncle. His warmth, humor, and strong-mannered nature made every moment spent with him unforgettable.

He is survived by his wife, Agata Anna (Hulak) DeGiovanni, two sisters, Angela Waack and her husband, Christopher, Mena Farhinas and her husband, Robert, two brothers, Vincent DeGiovanni and his wife, Susan and John DeGiovanni. Mark also leaves many loving nieces and nephews as well as his father and mother-in-law, Marke and Barbara (Sosinska) Hulak and one brother-in-law, Krzysztof Hulak.

Mark was predeceased by his parents, Gaetano and Michele (Ciampitti) DeGiovanni. His brother, Michael DeGiovanni , 51, passed only five months ago on October 13, 2024.

Mark’s presence will be profoundly missed, not only by his family but by the many throughout the boxing community he mentored and all who were lucky enough to know him. His legacy—both in and out of the ring—will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

In lieu of flowers donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Mark’s memory would be greatly appreciated. http://stjude.org
