In Memory of Mario Augusto Souza (1963–2026)
Mario Augusto Souza, 63, passed away suddenly on June 16, 2026.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge Street Newark, NJ on Tuesday, June 23 where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
Born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, he immigrated to the United States in 1987, where he built a life driven by his passion for endurance sports.
A dedicated triathlete, Mario made discipline and perseverance a way of life. Over decades of competition, he earned more than 600 medals and 250 trophies, achievements that reflected his talent, determination, and the love of training and competing.
In 1996, he reached one of his greatest accomplishments when he qualified for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii representing the United States in one of the most prestigious endurance events in the world. This achievement crowned years of hard work and his relentless pursuit of excellence.
More than his titles and accomplishments, Mario will be remembered for the inspiration he brought to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His example of dedication, humility, and sportsmanship will continue to live on among family, friends, and future generations of athletes.
Mario is survived by his mother, Ereni Souza; his sisters, Vitoria Cardoso, Maria DaSilva, Jacqueline Souza, and Anna Souza; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews - Isis Souza, and Lorena Carvalho. Anthony, Alexandra and Audrina Cardoso. Priscilla Cardoso. Jonathan, MaryAnn, Sofia, Juliana and Portia DaSilva. Sophia Voss and Mila Bastos. He will be especially missed by his dear friend, Kathy Bley.
Although his passing was unexpected, his story will live on through the memories he leaves behind and the extraordinary legacy he built through a lifetime devoted to fitness and health.
Thank you, Mario. Your example will continue to inspire us, and your memory will remain forever in our hearts. We’ll remember to go for one more mile and complete one more rep for you. Rest in peace.
