Manuel Rebelo, age 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, entering his heavenly home on Saturday, May 6, 2023. Manny was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and cherished friend to many.
Visiting will be held in the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, from 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia Church in Kearny at 10 am on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
Manny, is survived by Laurinda, his wife of 68 years, two daughters Lorie Pereira (Robert Kinloch), Angela Marie Bento (Anthony), a son Manny (Susan) and grandchildren Christian Pereira, Calla Pereira (Josef), Chad Pereira (Melissa), Brittany Lezoli (John), Courtney Bento, Dylan Bento, Micaela Rebelo, Chloe Rebelo, 6 great grandchildren, four nieces and a host of cousins.
Manuel was born in Monte, Murtosa, Portugal. At the age of 11 he came to the USA on the ship Serpa Pinto, with his mother Carolina and his brother Angelino. Once in America he was united to his father, Agostinho, and his two sisters, Palmira and Maria Luisa.
Manny was the first to open a Portuguese restaurant Roque and Rebelo, in the Ironbound. He was also the first restaurant in Newark, to be featured in The New York Times. Manny played soccer for many years in the Ironbound and was a lifetime member of the Sport Maritimo Murtoense Club of Newark.
Manny enjoyed fishing, spending his summers and weekends at his home in Point Pleasant, and his falls in Portugal. His greatest joy was his family. He supported each of his family loved ones with the same love and determination that he lived every day of his life.
