Jorge Tavares Flamengo

Jorge Tavares Flamengo, 85, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family and loved ones on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, in University Medical Center, Newark, NJ.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ on Sunday, December 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 4:00 p.m. Interment will take place on Monday, December 19 at 11:30 a.m. in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny.

Jorge was born in Portugal in April 1937, his parents were Sebastiao Flamengo and Rosa Tavares Rodas. He was the eldest of seven children. All are still with us, his siblings are Fernanda, Manuel, Jose, Anibal, Angelino and Alberto. Two of the brothers live here, two live in Brazil and two live in Portugal.

In 1954 he immigrated to Brazil where he met his wife Ilidia Gomes. They have two children, Fatima Flamengo Silva married to Andre Silva and Jorge Luis Flamengo married to Irene Almeida Flamengo. In 1980, following God’s guidance they immigrated to the United State, and in 1986 was ordained elder of the Christian Congregation of the United States. He was one of the oldest elders in the United States.

He was a servant of God and he never measured distance to do God’s work. He was a loving father and grandfather to Sarah Flamengo Silva married to Bruno Silva, Abigail De Oliveira married to Salomao De Oliveira, Deborah Flamengo Valerio married to Octavio Valerio, Bryan Flamengo married to Alice Flamengo and Brandon Flamengo and girlfriend Franciele Oliveira. He was a proud great-grandfather to Christopher Silva and Noah and Ellie De Oliveira. He touched many, many lives. He will be missed by all the brethren of our church and by all of his family. And most of all he will be missed by all of us that loved him so much and we will keep him in our hearts and memories forever.
