Gary Orban Obituary

Gary Orban, beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed peacefully into the Kingdom of God on August 2, 2025. He was surrounded by the love and comfort of his devoted wife and family at the time of his passing.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ on Saturday, August 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. Cremation will be private. Knights of Columbus, Council 402, Our Lady of Grace Service Saturday at 3:30 P.M.

Gary grew up in Harrison, NJ, later moving to Kearny before settling in Clinton, NJ with his beloved wife, Linda Bernett. Together, they shared more than 30 years filled with love, laughter, and steadfast devotion—including being proud parents to their two adored cats, Carlo and Bergie (named after two of Gary’s favorite Bruins players).

Gary was the cherished son of Eleanor (Kuczynski) (affectionately known as “Chubby”) and Joe Orban, a loving brother to Greg Orban, a proud uncle to Matt Orban, and a caring brother-in-law to Rob Bernett and Maria Orban. Though Gary had only one sibling, he shared an extraordinary lifelong bond with his tightly knit “cousin clan,” who were more like brothers and sisters - united by a joyful childhood filled with deep friendship, and love, creating countless cherished memories.

As the youngest of the cousin clan, Gary affectionately earned the nickname “Shadow” in his youth, often tagging along with his big brother Greg (seven years his senior) and the rest of the “big boy” cousins. From the little brother following behind, Gary grew into a man who left an unforgettable mark on everyone around him. In a reflection that speaks volumes, his brother Greg once shared that, while Gary may have been his younger brother, it was he, Greg, who spent most of their lives walking in Gary’s enormous shadow—a tribute to Gary’s quiet strength, strong character, and the deep love he so effortlessly gave.

Gary’s “family” extended far beyond his immediate relatives. In addition to his wife, parents, brother, nephew, aunts, uncles, and cousins, Gary opened his heart to countless friends who became like family. From childhood classmates to longtime coworkers, Gary formed deep and lasting bonds. His beloved Jets tailgate crews over the years, fellow Knights of Columbus brothers from Knights of Columbus Council 402, Our Lady of Grace in Harrison, NJ and bowling league buddies were just a few of the many circles he touched. Fittingly, he married his favorite bowling buddy, and soulmate, Linda.

A graduate of NJIT, Gary built a successful career in IT, holding roles at AT&T, IBM, CSF Corporation, and most recently at Iconectiv. A dedicated and talented professional, Gary brought intelligence, reliability, and heart to everything he did. His commitment to service and community was especially evident through his lifelong membership as a 3rd Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Harrison Council #402, Our Lady of Grace.

Gary found great joy in life’s adventures - especially his cherished annual trips to Saratoga, NY for horse racing, and fun-filled getaways to Las Vegas with friends and family, often perfectly timed with the NCAA basketball tournament.  A devoted sports enthusiast, Gary was a lifelong fan of the New York Jets (season ticket holder since 1984), the Boston Bruins, the New York Mets, and LSU Football and Basketball.

Gary was also a passionate music lover with an appreciation for a multitude of genres from heavy metal to country pop and even the occasionally musical show for a happy wife.   He had an uncanny ability to spot rising talent and always had his ear tuned to the music pipeline.  Gary especially loved the rhythm of playing the bass guitar and singing “Gary lyrics” to popular songs. Ask him a question about sports or music, and you’d be amazed at his encyclopedic knowledge - always shared with a touch of irony or a humorous twist on stats or lyrics that only Gary could deliver.

Known for his quick wit and infectious humor, Gary had a gift for making people laugh – whether bringing a quick chuckle to your lips or a deep belly laugh you could count on Gary to lighten the mood.  Above all, he was a compassionate and giving man who selflessly supported others throughout his life.

Above all, Gary was a man of compassion, loyalty, and heart.  He gave himself freely, supported those around him without hesitation, and lived his life with intention, generosity, and grace. Whether in his family, friendships, or professional life, Gary was a leader, a loving presence, and an example of a life well lived. Gary faced all challenges in life with a can do determination and by his example, helped many others do the same.

To the end Gary was a fighter. He will be remembered for his strength, kindness, loyalty, and laughter. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories he helped create.

Gary, may you enjoy your new skybox seat - cheering on your beloved Jets from above. You are deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
